It´s a very easy way to start your first blog on a free blogging platform like blogger.com etc. Short time later you will probably get to know the restrictions coming with the use of somebody else´s domain for your blog. Here´s why you should get an own domain for your blog if you plan to go beyond a very first look into blogging.
Be your own boss
If your blog is being hosted on someone else´s domain, may it be a large company like blogger.com or your best friend, you will always be at their mercy. If something gets screwed up, you have to rely on someone else to get it fixed. With your own domain or better your own webserver, you can get it fixed yourself anytime. Of course, this is not for everybody. Many people are genius at writing and marketing but don´t know much about fixing technical problems on a webserver. If you are somewhat tech-savvy you should get responsibility back to you.
Branding
You want your blog to grow up and get large visibility in the blogosphere. Branding will be much easier when you can communicate your blogs URL like thisismyblog.com rather than something hard to remembers like blogs.myfreebloghost.com/thisismyblog/ which looks like everything else but professional. You can get an own domain for less then $10 a year. Are you serious enough with your blogging to say, your blog is worth that money?
SEO effects
Getting links to your blog is vital for your blog together with some other key factors in promoting your blog.
Using someone else´s domain, you don´t have total control of these factors of SEO. Someone else does all the optimization for the domain. Chances are that you cannot get to where you want, if you are not able to tweak things, like it would be neccessary.
Want to sell your blog?
At some point in time, you might want to sell your blog for some reason. Could you really sell it, when your blog´s URL was blogs.myfreebloghost.com/thisismyblog/? Sure, you could just pass over your login data for money, but you will hardly find anyone paying you a serious amount of money, just for a user name and a password. It would be far more easy to sell your blog, if you could offer a domain like thisismyblog.com with it.
Same problem with having your name as your domain. I am not planning to sell my blog at any time - not only since I have just acquired the domain - I would be having a hard time to find someone who has the same name AND wants to buy my blog.
As I chose to really make this on MY blog, I won´t sell it either ways - though it is a question of the amount I´m being offered for it.
