Increase Blog Traffic Series

Blog carnivals can be a really good source of additional traffic. There hundreds of carnivals being held on a regular basis and some of them get read by many people. Here is how you can benefit from blog carnivals.

What are blog carnivals
A blog carnival basically is a post featuring a list of links to other blog posts focused on a certain topic. Bloggers can submit their post to the carnival and get it linked in the next issue of the carnival. Some of these carnivals are being hosted on more than one blog, but typically there is a certain blog hosting a certain carnival.
Blog carnivals are very much like a magazine being issued on a regular basis (e.g., every monday or every 2nd friday of the month). Each new issue provides a new lists of links to blog posts related to the carnival´s topic.

How to find a blog carnival
Finding a blog carnival for you to participate in, is very easy. I am using blogcarnival.com for this.

You can register with blogcarnival.com and use your login next time you get back, but it is not really necessary. You can use the site without a login too.
Just go ahead clicking on the index-link in the top right corner of the homepage:

You can now browse the list of blog carnivals coming up soon. For easier use you should sort the list by the date of the next issue of each carnival. Just click the sort-link which I marked with a red circle:

You can now browse through the list of carnivals having the next issue coming up in the next days. As there are carnivals on nearly every topic you could think of, finding one fit your blog´s topic should be very easy.
As soon as you have found a carnival related to your topic click on its name to get to the carnivals main page with additional information on it.

Scroll down a bit to find the submit-link and click on it.

Submit carnival

At this point, you are almost done. Just fill out the form and enter your name, the link to your post and its title.
Sometimes there is a drop-down list of categories to choose from. Choose the best category for your post and click submit. That´s all.

  1. Fred @ Newest on the Net Says:

Nice ideas. I need to do more carnivals.

  2. Lisa Says:

Thank you for these step by step instructions. I was going to look into carnivals today, but now I don’t have to…I’ll see what happens when I try out what you have posted here.

  3. Caroline Middlebrook Says:

I’ve been experimenting with these for about three weeks now. Each week I’ve submitted my best post to around 6-8 carnivals that were relevant and open that week. To be honest I have seen very little traffic from them. However, I still think its a useful exercise as they do bring in backlinks.

  4. Marco Says:

Fred and Lisa, would you come back and let us know about your experiences with carnivals?

Caroline, you are right. I´ve seen carnivals bringing in only 2-3 visitors, but I had a few which brought more than 10o. I´ll see, if I can find out, which one and let you know.

  5. Carlo Selorio Says:

    Hey Marco,

I started using blog carnivals lately and it really helped me with link backs, higher ranking with technorati and most of all traffic to my blog!

I love using it and I’ll definitely be using it more and more.

    Nice article again.

    Cheers,
    Carlo

  6. Marco Says:

Thanks Carlo. I have to do some carnivals again this weekend, didn´t manage to participate in some last week.

  7. Harry Potter Says:

I used quite a bit a few months ago, and like Caroline, I never saw much traffic. Even from big sites like Performancing.

Having said that, it’s still nice to have someone comment on your articles and get a few backlinks.
