Today I would like to share a little experiment with the blogosphere. Viral linking is a very good way to raise your rankings with technorati and - even more important - google and other search engines. If you try to make money from your blog, an extended structure of incoming links is vital for you.
Get the traffic and the link love
The recommendation carousel will bring like-minded bloggers together and provide real value to their respective communities. The whole web2.0-thing is about communities sharing their knowledge and what is common.
Why this will work
- It provides value through personal recommendations
- Links to your blog with linktext of your choice
- Backlinks come from within a dedicated content about your blog
- Rotating content will prevent it from penalties from search engines
- It is viral - more participants means greater effect
How it works
Simply follow these few steps to make this one working for you:
- Create a new post on your blog and start it with a few words about how you came into this carousel.
- Copy and paste the entire text between the red lines
- Check if all links are working after copy and paste
- Remove the very last recommendation from the list
- Add a recommendation of a blog you love to the top of the list with at least 2-3 sentences about why you love to read this blog and add a little note, that you recommend this together with a link to your blog. Here is an example:
MarcoRichter.net is a blog, I love to read on a daily basis. It provides latest information about blogging, linkbuilding and blog seo issues. From detailed how-to articles to some ultimate ressource lists, Marco covers a wide variety of information for your daily blogging routine. Recommended by: Marco Richter

- topsecretblogger.com - This one is a completely community driven project. Everyone is invited to sign up and write a post on the blog. Many contest will be attracting other bloggers to come in and join the project. I think this will become even more influential in the future, it´s definitely worth taking a closer look. Recommended by: Marco Richter
- probloggersmatrix.com - Mark´s blog is well-established and concentrates on topics about the relationship between bloggers and their readers. His posts are often titled as questions, what helps starting a conversation with the audience. Recommended by: Marco Richter

This carousel has been started by Marco Richter on viral linkbuilding - the basic concept is a slightly adjusted version of Alex Sysoef´s reciprocal review carousel.
Feel free to join the carousel and provide recommendations of your favorite blogs to the community. Do not forget to let them know about your recommendation, chances are, they will join the carousel as well. Then just sit back and watch your rankings rising and the traffic coming in, just by the power of viral linking.

Marco,
Thanks for heads-up. I’ll most definitely take part in it
and make sure to push it …
September 10th, 2007 at 11:19 am
Hi Alex,
looking forward to you joining the carousel. I´m doing my very best to push the project.

Great, this will boost the project. I already received two emails from others wanting to jump onto that.

Thanks for leaving a comment on www.seoonly.com re: your Viral Recommendation Carousel. I had Brandon place it on the blog this morning.
Your site contains similar content pertaining to SEO. If you’re interested in exchanging blogroll backlinks, let me know. I have two SEO blogs (the other is blog.colewiebe.com) so you’ll get two instant backlinks :-).
Cheers,
Cole

Sounds interesting…but maybe I am a little slow on this one… I just don’t see how this will get the participants all that many backlinks. Sure all the people on your list are going to get plenty, apart from Ryan Shamus who you have asked everyone to drop off for some reason I don’t get before people add theirs. You are going to get plenty because you are linked to no less than 4 times in the body of the copy text…the blog that each person recommends will get 1…but what do the participants get…a pingback mention in the comments? I just don’t see how this one works, sorry. Maybe I have missed something, are you going to update the list on your site with the recommendations so that the base list that others copy changes? Even still that’s only going to get the recommendations a few more, and not the participants. It just seems like a win win deal for you and a few others and lose lose for anyone who takes part. I don’t mean to stir up trouble, I just don’t see how it is going to get anyone who takes part back links. Anyway, interested to see how it works, maybe you could address my concerns and win me over on the idea, good luck.

Simon,
thanks for your interest. The participants will put their review on top of the list. At the end of that review, they will put: “Recommended by: put your name here” together with a link to their sites.
As this review will go down one step when the next one jumps upon this, a link to the participant´s site will remain in the list for 7 “generations” of the carousel before it drops out of the list.
I myself will end up having only one link in there, as most of the participants will change the links in the “example” to their own.
September 12th, 2007 at 5:07 am
Oh I see, and the readers of the participants will continue with the list from their blogs…makes sense. Very clever idea.

Marco - thanks for the mention! I am very flattered. I will be writing a post today for the Viral Recommendation Carousel. I also find it very interesting that you didn’t contact any of the sites you recommended and ask them to participate - which makes this EVEN MORE VIRAL!
Your idea is not only novel - it helps bloggers to connect to sites they didn’t know about a network with fellow bloggers. Building community is the most important part of building a brand and a strong blog.
September 12th, 2007 at 10:00 am
John, I am looking forward to your post. In fact, I contacted all recommended bloggers - except of you because I did not have your email and wasn´t able to find a way to contact you from your blog, though I was sure, you´d see the ping coming from here.
September 13th, 2007 at 12:07 pm
Wow, thanks Marco for pointing that out. I now have a contact form put up on the site. Oh - and of course, like all of my blogging mistakes, wrote a post about this one!
Thanks again Marco!

Hi Marco,
The rebirth of the carousel is a great idea. Alex sent an email about it and as I had joined his original venture, which was a great success, I was only too happy to join in again. It does work wonders and it can spin around for quite a while.
Great stuff
September 19th, 2007 at 8:19 am
Thanks Colin. It is starting to cycle more and more.
September 19th, 2007 at 5:52 pm
Hello Marco,
Thanks a lot for the idea. I hope more will join the carousel. Good Luck to all.
All good Things,
Al Link

Hi Crap World, I hope it will work for you, even if it is the very first post on your blog.
October 23rd, 2007 at 11:12 am
Very good writeup and useful tips… keep the good work going!
October 23rd, 2007 at 3:36 pm
Good idea. I like this better than the other chain articles that get started. This revolving list will keep it small. My carousel is being published this Thursday morning.
October 23rd, 2007 at 4:37 pm
Neil, thanks for jumping in. I will definitely stop by on thursday.
